Existing Living Radical Polymerization Method

First reporting of NMP from Georges in 1993, attempt to utilize living radical polymerization method in the industry has been actively studied in the world. But, existing method has held the specific problem, and it is not yet become the technology for industrially at present.

We introduce typical living radical polymerization method developed in recent 15 years or less.

  1. Nitroxide mediated living radical polymerization (NMP)
The method of forming the Nitroxylate radical, active radical, reversibly by using the stable radical, mainly the hydroxylamine derivative, as Dormant species and by heating it.
  2. Atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)
The method of generating radical kind reversibly by using the organic halogen compound as Dormant species and utilizes the oxidation reduction reaction of transition metal catalyst complex such as ruthenium and copper.
  3. Reversible addition・fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT)
The method of generating radical kind by reversible addition cleavage reaction using the Thiocarbonyl compound, such as Trithiocarbonate and Dithioester, as Dormant species and the radical kind. Those which use xanthate are called especially MADIX.

Dormant species: stable chemical called Dormant at radical reaction.
