What is Living Radical Polymerization?

It is the high-molecular synthetic method utilizing the feature of the radical that mainly used for industrially benefiting variety of polymerizable monomer and ease of handling the reaction type which lower the production cost.
Polymerization is mostly using Azo initiator and peroxide.
In general, polymerization mechanism is consisted of four elementary processes as initiation reaction, the propagation reaction, the cessation reaction, and chain transfer. Once start radical forms, which reacts to monomer one after another, the propagation reaction happens. The polymerization terminal radical formed by this reaction receiving the cessation reaction by the recombination and the disproportionation reaction becomes the dead polymer. As a result, uneven length of the molecule polymer is formed.

Living Radical Polymerization

It consists of only the initiation reaction and the propagation reaction in polymerization process, which does not accompany the deactivate growth end side reaction such as the chain transfer reaction or the cessation reaction. When such condition is formed, growth end is said “living” because of the fact it continues to maintain the growth active reaction in the midst of polymerization.
Since chain transfer does not occur, length of the polymer is respectively even. In addition, it is possible to synthesize the block polymer by making use of growth end of the polymer (A), synthesized by the living radical polymerization, and by adding different monomer (monomer B) that the polymerization advances to the new monomer. This method of uniting the superior feature of the radical polymerization and the living polymerization is expected becoming basic technology of the creation for the high polymer materials having high-level function.
