Living Radical Polymerization

New Living Radical Polymerization Method : TERP

Otsuka Chemical collaborated with Prof. Yamago Shigeru of Kyoto University to develop a new polymerization method called TERP (Tellurium mediated Radical Polymerization). This unique method uses an organic tellurium compound as an initiator to synthesize molecules. TERP technology is remarkable both on an advanced academic level, but also from a commercial perspective due to our ability to precisely control molecular weight, polymer structure, and functionality.

Advantages

  1. Possible Types of Polymers : TERP works even with non-conjugated monomers, monomers with polar functional groups, etc.
  2. Potential to Control Molecular Weight : Not only can TERP easily produce molecules with molecular weight in tens of thousands, it is possible to control molecular weight from hundreds of thousands up to one million.
  3. Wide Range of Functionality : TERP can create functional polymers that were impossible using other living radical polymerization methods. (precise block co-polymers, random polymers)
  4. Easy Process for Mass Production : Because of excellent handling properties of TERP, even in the production of several ton level, polymers of the same quality as laboratory scale can be obtained.
